Teaching Imitation Skills to Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Review of Literature
Park Hye-Jin

Abstract
Imitation is one of the major areas that children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) experience difficulties with early in life. Given the importance of imitation as a basis for observational learning and later development, providing an effective imitation intervention should be considered as a priority in educating children with ASD. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to examine research regarding imitation interventions for children with ASD and to find the elements of the intervention that appear to positively influence the imitation skills of those children. The studies were categorized into four interventions: adult-led intervention, reciprocal imitation training, peer modeling, and video modeling. Given the limited and variable results of adult-led intervention, the review suggested that imitation intervention following child¡¯s lead and adopting more naturalistic procedures would warrant an effective imitation instruction. Key elements of the effective imitation intervention and implications for practice were discussed. Suggestions for future research were also provided.
